Markets Direct, Inc.
Electronic Bookseller
Markets Direct, Inc. is a new and innovative company. We function as a direct
channel marketing organization. This innovative concept allows you to order
books any time of the day using our telecommunication software, MDI20. You can
purchase books using your Visa or Mastercard, or have them sent C.O.D. All you
need is an MS-DOS compatible computer with a Hayes compatible modem.
MDI20 allows you to enter your order on-screen in a plain-and-simple fashion. To
order a book, you'll need to enter the ISBN number, title and number of copies
desired. When complete, MDI20 will dial our toll-free number and transmit your
order; this usually takes only 30 seconds - fast and easy.
To assist you in making your selections, we have included MDICAT, an
electronic catalog containing most of the books we offer. Using MDICAT you can
browse, search by title or ISBN number, or scan titles for keywords. When you
find a book you want, "pick" it and MDICAT will store your selections in a
file. Your selection will then be loaded automatically by MDI20 when you are
ready to place your order! The catalog contains mainly computer books but if
know the ISBN number and title any book can be ordered.
Book sales are only the beginning. Soon Markets Direct will expand and offer
name brand software and computer hardware - all at discount prices.
If you have a business that could benefit from using MDI20's marketing
techniques, please call 1-800-748-1895 and ask for Bob, or write to:

Instructions for using MDI20
MDI20 allows you to enter your order using a full screen order form. When the
order form is complete, MDI20 will send your order directly to our computer
system using our toll-free number. Your order will be processed within 24
hours, and you should receive your selections within two weeks. Some special
books will require longer times. If we require additional time a back order
card will be sent listing the additional time required to complete your
order.
The first time you use MDI20, it will ask you some basic questions about your
modem; its maximum speed and the port it is connected to. MDI20 requires a Hayes
compatible modem connected to any COM port. Once this information is
established, MDI20 will store it in MDI20.CNF. If you change modems or connect it
to another port, erase MDI20.CNF and run MDI20 again to establish your new
configuration. We are currently having trouble communicating with 9600 baud
modems so please use a slower speed.
Filling out MDI20's order form is very simple. However, no matter how simple a
program may be to use, it takes a time or two to become comfortable with it.
So go through the motions of placing an order, and when finished press the
[Escape] key to abort and return to MS-DOS.
When filling out MDI20's order form, certain fields are required to contain
information. MDI20 will not let you pass a required field that is blank. So with
that in mind, let's look at the order form field-by-field.
SOLD TO
Enter the buyer's name, address, city, state, zip code and phone number in
this section. This section must be filled out, even if the order is being
charged to a credit card. If we need to contact you my mail regarding your
order, we will use this address.
The most important item in this section is the phone number, as it serves two
purposes. First, your phone number becomes your account number. So please be
sure it includes the area code. Second, if there is a problem with your order,
we may attempt to contact you using this number. We reserve the right to
refuse an order if the phone number is incomplete or contains invalid
information.
SHIP TO
Enter the recipient's name, address, city, state and zip code. You may
optionally enter their phone number to aid in delivery. We cannot ship to a
PO Box unless by USPS. UPS and FedEx cannot deliver to a PO Box.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTION
This section tells us how to process your order and is divided into five
sections.
Ship Via Here you specify how you would like your order shipped. You
have three choices:
1) United Parcel Service (UPS ground)
2) United States Postal Service (USPS)
3) Federal Express (FedEx air)
Please remember that if delivery is to be made to a P.O. Box
you must pick #2. Shipping charges will be added to the order
total.
Payment Here you specify how you will pay for your order. Once again
you have three choices:
1) Charge to your MasterCard account
2) Charge to your Visa account
3) Send order C.O.D.
Orders sent C.O.D. are subject to a $3.00 C.O.D. fee. Also,
delivery agents require payment to be made in the exact amount
of the order, and prefer check or money order.
Card Number If you are paying by credit card, you must enter the account
number here. Please double check the account number. If it is
incorrect your order will be delayed or possibly refused.
Expires If you are paying by credit card, you must enter the
date your credit card expires here.
Issued To If you are paying by credit card, you must also enter the
cardholder's name as it appears on the card.
Once you have filled out the above information, MDI20 will store it in the
MDI20.CNF file. The next time you use MDI20, this information will be retreived
thus saving you some typing.
ATTENTION CREDIT CARD USERS
MDI20 stores confidential information in its MDI20.CNF file. Along with your name,
address and phone number, MDI20 also stores your credit card numbers, expiration
dates and cardholder's names. Because of this we do not recommend that you
share your MDI20 diskette with friends and associates. Guard your MDI20 diskette
as you would your credit cards! If you wish to share MDI20 with a friend (which
we encourage), be sure to erase the MDI20.CNF file before making copies of the
software.
Now we've come to the best part - entering your selections.
If you used MDICAT to pick your selections, you will see them appear one by
one as you move your cursor to each field. First the ISBN number will appear;
press [Enter] to continue to the next field. The book's title will appear
next; press [Enter] to continue to the next field. Now enter the number of
copies you wish to order. You must enter a value from 0 to 99 - MDI20 will not
let you continue if this field is blank. You may enter a quantity of zero if
you change your mind about a selection. MDI20 will skip it.
You may enter your selections manually if you so desire, and is the only way
to order books not listed in our catalog. Here's what we need field by field:
ISBN Number This is a key field in that it specifies exactly which book
you want to order. You may enter hyphens or spaces if you
like to make the number easier to read. Please double check
the number to ensure it is correct!
Title This field is required so that we can double check your order.
A mismatch between ISBN number and title indicates an error.
Help us serve you best by including as much of the title as
possible.
Quantity Here you tell us how many copies you wish to order. You must
enter a value from 0 to 99 - MDI20 will not let you continue if
this field is blank. You may enter a quantity of zero if you
change your mind about a selection. MDI20 will skip it.
You may order up to five selections at once. After you enter you fifth
selection, MDI20 will ask if you are ready to transmit your order.
If you are ordering less than five books, press [PgDn] after entering the last
item. MDI20 will then ask if you are ready to transmit your order.
MDI20 will now ask "Okay to send order?" If you are ready to have your order
transmitted, type [Y] and press [Enter]. If you are not ready, type [N] and
press [Enter]. You may press the [Escape] key at any time to abandon the order
and return to MS-DOS.
After MDI20 transmits your order, and acknowledgement number will be displayed.
This acknowledgement number indicates that your order was received by our
computer system and stored with the other incomming orders.
If MDI20 displays anything other than an acknowledgement number, this means your
order was not successfully transmitted. You will be asked if you want to try
retransmitting your order.
Key Functions
Several keys have functions assigned to them. When one of these keys are
pressed, MDI20 will perform a function. Here is a list of the keys MDI20
recognizes and the functions assigned to them:
Key Name Function
[Del] Deletes the character that the cursor in on.
[Esc] Exit MDI20 and return to MD-DOS. MDI20's configuration as well
as information in the order header will be stored in the file
MDI20.CNF in the current directory and drive.
[PgUp] Moves the cursor up to a previous section of the order form.
[PgDn] Moves the cursor down to the next section of the order form.
When in the bottom section, press this key to transmit the
order.
[up] Move up to previous field or line.
[down] Move down to next field. MDI20 will not let you pass a required
field if it is blank.
[left] Moves cursor left 1 character.
[right] Moves cursor right 1 character.
It is our goal to make MDI20 fast and easy to use. To achieve this we've tried
to keep it simple and to the point. If you have suggestions or comments
regarding MDI20 please write to us.
